2023-08-07 -- Sant Pao Hospital

The foundation for the new facilities of Sant Pau Hospital(1) was laid over a century ago, in 1901. However, the hospital itself has a much longer history, having been established five centuries earlier, in 1401.

We shouldn't overlook Spain's rich history, particularly its period of great power and wealth.

The new hospital buildings were designed in the Art Nouveau style(2), a movement characterized by flowing lines, intricate details, and natural motifs like flowers and butterflies. This style demanded a high level of skill and precision, making construction a time-consuming process.

While the complex has since been retired and replaced with modern facilities, it remains a significant cultural landmark for both Spain and Catalonia.

One might wonder if such an elaborate project was necessary for a hospital. Couldn't the limited resources have been better spent on simpler buildings to provide immediate care?

The answer is not straightforward. Many, including myself, appreciate the beauty and artistry of the complex. However, it's also understandable to question the allocation of resources and prioritize practical needs.

When I was a child, a revolution upended my country. Unfortunately, a lack of political maturity prevented people from fully understanding the situation. Influenced by negative media, both domestic and foreign, the opposition painted a picture of a brutal government that oppressed its people. However, thanks to platforms like YouTube and historical interviews, we can now glimpse a more accurate portrayal of Iran.

Recently, while watching an old documentary, I stumbled upon a thought-provoking exchange. The interviewer questioned the Shah of Iran about the insufficient number of hospitals and universities. Surprisingly, it was revealed that much of Iran's current infrastructure was either built or planned before the revolution. Shah explained that while they could construct more hospitals, a shortage of qualified medical professionals limited their capacity. The government was investing in higher education by sending students abroad, but building infrastructure had to align with the future availability of skilled workers.

It's a reminder that, perhaps in 1900, Barcelona had sufficient healthcare facilities, but lacked the necessary medical staff. So, why not construct a building that, in addition to serving as a hospital, could have future uses once its primary function was obsolete?

Sant Pau Hospital is a historic masterpiece that seamlessly blends art, architecture, and function. It should be preserved for future generations to appreciate.

A city's true value lies not solely in its economic strength, but also in its cultural richness, artistic heritage, safety, culinary diversity, and educated populace. Many non-monetary factors contribute to a city's quality of life.
