The Smithsonian (1) Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. If you haven’t had a chance to see any part of it, it’s your loss. It’s free, and literally, except for time, you have nothing to invest.
My love for America (now I’m reevaluating) started before the age of 8, watching movies in our elementary school about how someday people would live in space. Of course, there was NASA and its achievements, such as landing on the moon. So, it’s natural that the very first building of the Smithsonian I had to visit was the National Air and Space Museum.
Years after, every time I was in D.C., I visited the Smithsonian again, and if I had no time, at least I spent an hour in the National Air and Space Museum.
I have to say, what I had seen was not even close to what it has become today, not even close.
There's a new facility close to Washington Dulles International Airport (2).
If you're traveling out of this airport, just give yourself a couple of hours to spend here after you've dropped off your luggage. If you're traveling like me, with only a backpack, then arriving or departing, you'll have a great time!
